Completing the square: what you need to know

Completing the square rewrites a quadratic as (x+p)2+q(x + p)^2 + q. In that form you can read the turning point straight off, which is why it appears in grade 7–8 questions about sketching curves.

Key facts

  • x2+bx+c=(x+b2)2−(b2)2+cx^2 + bx + c = \left(x + \frac{b}{2}\right)^2 - \left(\frac{b}{2}\right)^2 + c
  • The turning point of y=(x+p)2+qy = (x + p)^2 + q is (−p,q)(-p, q): change the sign inside the bracket only.
  • For a(x+p)2+qa(x + p)^2 + q the turning point is still (−p,q)(-p, q). It is a minimum if aa is positive and a maximum if aa is negative.
  • If the x2x^2 term has a coefficient (even −1-1), take it out of the x2x^2 and xx terms first: 2x2+12x=2(x2+6x)2x^2 + 12x = 2(x^2 + 6x).
  • To solve (x+p)2+q=0(x + p)^2 + q = 0, rearrange to (x+p)2=−q(x + p)^2 = -q and square root both sides, remembering ±\pm: e.g. (x+3)2=5(x + 3)^2 = 5 gives x=−3±5x = -3 \pm \sqrt{5}.

Completing the square

  1. If needed, factor out the coefficient of x2x^2 from the x2x^2 and xx terms.
  2. Halve the coefficient of xx and write (x+half)2(x + \text{half})^2.
  3. Subtract the square of that half (multiplied by any factor you took out).
  4. Tidy up the constants.

Worked examples

Example 1 Higher · grade 7

Write x2−6x+11x^2 - 6x + 11 in the form (x−a)2+b(x - a)^2 + b, and give the turning point of y=x2−6x+11y = x^2 - 6x + 11.

Show the solution

Half of −6-6 is −3-3: (x−3)2=x2−6x+9(x - 3)^2 = x^2 - 6x + 9
x2−6x+11=(x−3)2−9+11=(x−3)2+2x^2 - 6x + 11 = (x - 3)^2 - 9 + 11 = (x - 3)^2 + 2
Turning point: (3,2)(3, 2)

Example 2 Higher · grade 8

Write 2x2+12x+52x^2 + 12x + 5 in the form a(x+b)2+ca(x + b)^2 + c and find the turning point of its graph.

Show the solution

Factor 2 from the xx terms: 2(x2+6x)+52(x^2 + 6x) + 5
x2+6x=(x+3)2−9x^2 + 6x = (x + 3)^2 - 9
2[(x+3)2−9]+5=2(x+3)2−18+52[(x + 3)^2 - 9] + 5 = 2(x + 3)^2 - 18 + 5
=2(x+3)2−13= 2(x + 3)^2 - 13
Turning point: (−3,−13)(-3, -13)

Example 3 Higher · grade 8

Find the turning point of y=3+8x−2x2y = 3 + 8x - 2x^2 and say whether it is a maximum or a minimum.

Show the solution

Rewrite in order: y=−2x2+8x+3y = -2x^2 + 8x + 3
Factor −2-2 from the xx terms: −2(x2−4x)+3-2(x^2 - 4x) + 3
x2−4x=(x−2)2−4x^2 - 4x = (x - 2)^2 - 4
−2[(x−2)2−4]+3=−2(x−2)2+8+3-2[(x - 2)^2 - 4] + 3 = -2(x - 2)^2 + 8 + 3
=−2(x−2)2+11= -2(x - 2)^2 + 11
Turning point (2,11)(2, 11). The x2x^2 coefficient is negative, so it is a maximum.

Common mistakes

  • Getting the sign of the turning point wrong: (x+3)2−13(x + 3)^2 - 13 gives x=−3x = -3, not 33.
  • Forgetting to multiply the subtracted square by the factor taken out: in 2[(x+3)2−9]2[(x + 3)^2 - 9] the −9-9 becomes −18-18, and in −2[(x−2)2−4]-2[(x - 2)^2 - 4] the −4-4 becomes +8+8.
  • Adding the square instead of subtracting it.

Exam tips

  • Expand your completed-square form to check it matches the original quadratic.
  • If a question says 'hence' find the turning point, read it from your completed square rather than starting again.

Questions people ask

How do you complete the square?

Halve the coefficient of xx, write (x+half)2(x + \text{half})^2, then subtract the half squared and add the original constant.

How do you find the turning point from completing the square?

For (x+p)2+q(x + p)^2 + q, the turning point is (−p,q)(-p, q). Change the sign of the number in the bracket; keep the sign of the number outside.

Answery=4(x−7)2−196y = 4(x - 7)^2 - 196, so the turning point is (7,−196)(7, -196)3 marks

y=4(x2−14x)y = 4(x^2 - 14x)
