Algebraic fractions: what you need to know

Algebraic fractions follow exactly the same rules as ordinary fractions, but the numerators and denominators are expressions. This Higher-only topic appears near the end of the paper and relies on good factorising.

Key facts

  • You can only cancel factors, never single terms: factorise the top and bottom first.
  • Add or subtract with a common denominator: ab+cd=ad+bcbd\frac{a}{b} + \frac{c}{d} = \frac{ad + bc}{bd}.
  • Multiply tops and bottoms; to divide, flip the second fraction and multiply.
  • Look for the difference of two squares, e.g. x2−9=(x+3)(x−3)x^2 - 9 = (x + 3)(x - 3).
  • Write a whole number over the common denominator too, e.g. 2=2(x+3)x+32 = \frac{2(x + 3)}{x + 3}.

Simplifying

  1. Factorise the numerator and denominator fully (take out common factors first, and watch for non-unit quadratics such as 2x2−5x−3=(2x+1)(x−3)2x^2 - 5x - 3 = (2x + 1)(x - 3)).
  2. Cancel any bracket that appears on both top and bottom.

Adding or subtracting

  1. Use the product of the denominators (or their LCM) as the common denominator.
  2. Multiply each numerator by what its denominator was multiplied by, using brackets.
  3. Expand the top carefully, especially after a minus sign, and simplify.

Solving an equation with algebraic fractions

  1. Multiply every term, including any number on the right-hand side, by the common denominator so all the fractions disappear.
  2. Expand the brackets and rearrange into the form ax2+bx+c=0ax^2 + bx + c = 0.
  3. Solve by factorising or the quadratic formula, giving surds in simplest form if asked.

Worked examples

Example 1 Higher · grade 7

Simplify fully x2−9x2+5x+6\frac{x^2 - 9}{x^2 + 5x + 6}

Show the solution

Top: x2−9=(x+3)(x−3)x^2 - 9 = (x + 3)(x - 3)
Bottom: x2+5x+6=(x+2)(x+3)x^2 + 5x + 6 = (x + 2)(x + 3)
Cancel (x+3)(x + 3): x−3x+2\frac{x - 3}{x + 2}

Example 2 Higher · grade 8

Write 3x+2−2x−1\frac{3}{x + 2} - \frac{2}{x - 1} as a single fraction in its simplest form.

Show the solution

Common denominator: (x+2)(x−1)(x + 2)(x - 1)
3(x−1)−2(x+2)(x+2)(x−1)\frac{3(x - 1) - 2(x + 2)}{(x + 2)(x - 1)}
Top: 3x−3−2x−4=x−73x - 3 - 2x - 4 = x - 7
Answer: x−7(x+2)(x−1)\frac{x - 7}{(x + 2)(x - 1)}

Example 3 Higher · grade 8

Solve 3x+1+2x=1\frac{3}{x + 1} + \frac{2}{x} = 1. Give your answers in the form a±ba \pm \sqrt{b}.

Show the solution

Multiply every term by x(x+1)x(x + 1): 3x+2(x+1)=x(x+1)3x + 2(x + 1) = x(x + 1)
5x+2=x2+x5x + 2 = x^2 + x
x2−4x−2=0x^2 - 4x - 2 = 0
x=4±16+82=4±262x = \frac{4 \pm \sqrt{16 + 8}}{2} = \frac{4 \pm 2\sqrt{6}}{2}
x=2±6x = 2 \pm \sqrt{6}

Common mistakes

  • Cancelling terms rather than factors, such as crossing out x2x^2 from x2−9x2+5x+6\frac{x^2 - 9}{x^2 + 5x + 6}.
  • Adding tops and bottoms separately: 3x+4x+1\frac{3}{x} + \frac{4}{x + 1} is not 72x+1\frac{7}{2x + 1}.
  • Not multiplying the minus sign through the second bracket when subtracting.
  • Forgetting to flip the second fraction when dividing.
  • When solving, forgetting to multiply the number on the right-hand side by the common denominator.

Exam tips

  • There are usually marks for correct factorising and for the common denominator, even if the final answer slips, so show each line.
  • In a "show that" question, your last line must match the given form exactly.

Questions people ask

How do you simplify algebraic fractions?

Factorise the numerator and the denominator completely, then cancel any brackets that are the same on the top and bottom.

How do you add algebraic fractions?

Find a common denominator, usually by multiplying the two denominators, adjust each numerator to match, then combine and simplify the top.

Common denominator 10x10x:

4x+32x=5(4x+3)10x=20x+1510x\frac{4x + 3}{2x} = \frac{5(4x + 3)}{10x} = \frac{20x + 15}{10x} and 35=6x10x\frac{3}{5} = \frac{6x}{10x}

2x2−6x−56=2(x+4)(x−7)2x^2 - 6x - 56 = 2(x + 4)(x - 7) and 3x−21=3(x−7)3x - 21 = 3(x - 7).

(x+4)×2x+32(x+4)(x−7)=2x+32(x−7)(x + 4) \times \frac{2x + 3}{2(x + 4)(x - 7)} = \frac{2x + 3}{2(x - 7)}

143(x−7)+2x+32(x−7)=28+3(2x+3)6(x−7)=6x+376x−42\frac{14}{3(x - 7)} + \frac{2x + 3}{2(x - 7)} = \frac{28 + 3(2x + 3)}{6(x - 7)} = \frac{6x + 37}{6x - 42}

Watch out: Multiplying by the divisor instead of its reciprocal.
