Percentages: what you need to know

Per cent means 'out of 100', so 35% is 35100\frac{35}{100} or 0.350.35. Percentages appear across the whole paper, from shopping discounts to comparing test scores.

Key facts

  • 50%=1250\% = \frac{1}{2}, 25%=1425\% = \frac{1}{4}, 10%=11010\% = \frac{1}{10}, 1%=11001\% = \frac{1}{100}.
  • Percentage to decimal: divide by 100, so 35%=0.3535\% = 0.35, 4.5%=0.0454.5\% = 0.045 and 120%=1.2120\% = 1.2. Percentage to fraction: put it over 100 and simplify, so 20%=20100=1520\% = \frac{20}{100} = \frac{1}{5}.
  • x%x\% of an amount =x100×= \frac{x}{100} \times amount.
  • AA as a percentage of BB =AB×100= \frac{A}{B} \times 100.
  • A percentage over 100% means more than the whole, e.g. 150%150\% of 40=6040 = 60.

Finding a percentage of an amount

  1. Without a calculator, build it from 10%, 5% and 1%: 35% = 10% + 10% + 10% + 5%.
  2. With a calculator, multiply by the decimal: 0.35×600.35 \times 60.

One quantity as a percentage of another

  1. Write it as a fraction: part over whole (same units).
  2. Multiply by 100.
  3. To compare, turn each into a percentage and compare those.

Worked examples

Example 1 Foundation · grade 2

Work out 35%35\% of £60 without a calculator.

Show the solution

10%10\% of £60 =£6= £6, so 30%=£1830\% = £18
5%=£35\% = £3
35%=18+3=£2135\% = 18 + 3 = £21

Example 2 Foundation · grade 4

Chloe scored 4242 out of 5656 in maths and 3434 out of 4545 in science. In which test did she do better?

Show the solution

Maths: 4256×100=75%\frac{42}{56} \times 100 = 75\%
Science: 3445×100=75.6%\frac{34}{45} \times 100 = 75.6\% (1 d.p.)
She did slightly better in science.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking 20% of an hour is 20 minutes. It's 12 minutes.
  • Moving the decimal point the wrong way or the wrong number of places: 0.3=30%0.3 = 30\% (not 3%) and 1.5%=0.0151.5\% = 0.015.
  • Dividing by the wrong total when finding one amount as a percentage of another.
  • Stopping early: if you work out 30% chose one option, check whether the question wants the other 70%.
  • Adding or subtracting percentages when one is a percentage of another: 70% of an 80% group is 0.7×0.8=0.560.7 \times 0.8 = 0.56, so 56% of everyone.

Exam tips

  • In comparison questions, show both percentages and then write a clear conclusion.
  • Show your 10% and 5% steps on the non-calculator paper so you can pick up method marks even if the final answer slips.

Questions people ask

How do you work out a percentage of a number?

Change the percentage to a decimal and multiply, for example 15% of 80 is 0.15×80=120.15 \times 80 = 12.

How do you find what percentage one number is of another?

Divide the first by the second and multiply by 100. For 18 out of 24: 18÷24×100=75%18 \div 24 \times 100 = 75\%.

Compare savings given as a percentage, a fraction spent and a ratio, to see who saves most.

Show answer
AnswerIsabel (saves 30%, against 28% and 25%)4 marks

Worked solution Checked against the mark scheme

Gavin saves 28%.

Harry spends 34\frac{3}{4}, so saves 14=25%\frac{1}{4} = 25\%.

Isabel saves 33+7=310=30%\frac{3}{3+7} = \frac{3}{10} = 30\%.

30% is the biggest, so Isabel saves the most.

Watch out: Taking Isabel's share as 3/7 instead of 3/10.

Let B have side 2, so A has side 1.

Area of B =4= 4, area of A =1= 1

The diagonal halves A, so the shaded part =12= \frac{1}{2}

0.54×100=12.5%\frac{0.5}{4} \times 100 = 12.5\%

Watch out: Thinking half the side means half the area, giving 25%.

AnswerJan's Store: 104 g per £1 against 100 g per £14 marks

Worked solution Checked against the mark scheme

Food Mart: £5×0.8=£4£5 \times 0.8 = £4 for 400 g, so 400÷4=100400 \div 4 = 100 g per £1.

Jan's Store: 400×1.3=520400 \times 1.3 = 520 g for £5, so 520÷5=104520 \div 5 = 104 g per £1.

104 > 100, so Jan's Store is better value.

Watch out: Assuming 20% off and 30% extra can be compared directly without calculating.
